* The Team: Pecha Kucha Nights would be organized by point8 forum, with help and support from the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Charlotte, and the Winthrop University Galleries. [Pecha KuchaTM is devised and shared by Klein Dytham Architecture, Tokyo]

Why should you present at the first ever Pecha Kucha Night in Charlotte?

  • to air your work/ideas, share your observations, express your opinions
  • to challenge yourself to be creative in getting your message across
  • to present to a broad city-wide audience
  • place yourself among the best creative talent in town

Who should present?

Pecha Kucha is the most popular among design, visual art, architecture, and in general among the “creative community” around the world.

But let us just look at a sample of the profiles/titles of presenters from different venue…

  • collector
  • embroiderer
  • architect
  • guerilla gardener
  • researcher
  • traveling craftsman
  • illustrator
  • engineer
  • publisher
  • mother/daughter
  • painter
  • graphic designer
  • typographer
  • city mayor
  • photographer
  • street performer
  • anthropologist
  • dance company
  • director

...you get the idea.

Does any of that describe you? If not, may be it is time we added to that list.

Pecha Kucha offers a level playing ground. It doesn’t matter whether you own a multinational design firm, or are dreaming of starting your own tattoo parlor some day, everyone gets exactly 400 seconds in the spotlight.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES – What should you present?

Anything you want to.

The only restriction is the number of images (20) – and the time you have for each slide (20 seconds each). So you are limited to 400 seconds, or 6 minutes 40 seconds.

But beyond that there aren’t that many restrictions. No subject is off limits, all points of view allowed, It will be you, your subject, and the audience. So, you can come to vent, promote, posture, or proselytize.

Remember, PK is all about being creative – how you show something is as important as in what you show.

Some of the things allowed include… talking, singing, hopping around on one leg, remaining silent, letting your puppet do the talking… not that we expect you to do all/any of that. Just letting you know that those options are out there…

Some Tips on presenting from people who have done it before – do read before submitting your entries:

The selection process:

Even though we would like to accommodate everyone who wants to present, the time constraints limit us to 20 presentations on the first PK Night. A panel* made up of artists, designers, and architects from point8, AIA and Winthrop will be selecting the 20 presenters, and announcing the selection by Monday, Sept 15th.

The presenters will be selected based on the quality of the entries, the originality of the theme/ideas submitted. We would also be attempting to ensure the widest variety of media and people in the range of presentations on each PK Night.
